The Prešov Region (in Slovak:
Prešovský
kraj ) is one of
the eight
Slovak
administrative regions. It is located in the northeastern part
of
Slovakia and
consists of 13 districts:
- Prešov District
- Sabinov District
- Bardejov District
- Svidník District
- Vranov nad Topľou District
- Levoča District
- Kežmarok District
- Stará Ľubovňa District
- Poprad District
- Medzilaborce District
- Humenné District
- Snina District
- Stropkov District
The Prešov region is located in the east of Slovakia. It borders
with the Košice, Žilina and Banská Bystrica region. It has common
borders with Poland and Ukraine. The Prešov region is one of the
largest regions with the highest number of inhabitants.
The region is of mountainous character. In its western part, the
most known national park the High Tatras is situated.
The rich water resources are provided by the rivers Poprad and
Topľa, and the large water dams, of which Domaša is the largest, an
important recreation area of the region. The area is
litho-geographically heterogeneous.
The most important minerals are the non-metallic raw materials,
of which the white salt is the most important. Other important raw
materials are the construction materials as gravel, sand and
brick-clay.
The economy of the region is characterized by industry and
agriculture. Food and chemical industries are distributed quite
evenly. Machinery, textile and apparel, electro-technical and wood
processing industries are also present. The machinery and
electrotechnical industry are concentrated in the districts of
Prešov and Svidník. Wood processing industry is located mainly in
the Prešov and Vranov nad Toplou districts.
The road and the railway systems in the region Prešov are well
developed. One international airport is also located in Poprad,
used mainly for charter flights. The central town Prešov is only 40
km far from the international airport in Košice.
