The region of Veneto is situated in the North-East side of Italy
between the Dolomite mountains and the Adriatic Sea. It is divided
into 7 Provinces - Venezia, Verona, Padova, Vicenza, Treviso,
Rovigo e Belluno and the Regional Administrative Centre of
Venezia.
It has a population of 4,577,408 inhabitants, accounting for
7.7% of the total Italian population, and covers a geographical
area of 18,398,85 km2.
The territory is mainly flat and is rich in rivers (among which
the Po and the Adige, the two longest rivers in the country).
Veneto is considered one of the main "engines" behind Italian
industry and its economy has a lengthy tradition of agricultural
and industrial activity. At the heart of this industry is Porto
Marghera, overlooking the Gulf of Venice, where an important
shipbuilding industry has also developed. In recent decades the
Region's dynamism has led to the founding of numerous small and
medium-sized companies and the establishment of many large
industrial groups mainly specialized in export-oriented sectors
such as eye-wear, clothing, jewellery, shoe manufacturing, leather
tanning and marble processing.
It boasts over 450,000 small to medium-sized companies which
means one company to every ten inhabitants in the Veneto. The
Veneto Region is an autonomous territorial organization with
legislative powers which, together with the other nineteen Regions,
the State and the Autonomous Provinces, make up the
Italian Republic. The twenty Italian Regions, five of which
have a special statute, were instituted by the Constitution in
1948.
